Silent Birthday Line
Line up in birthday order. Nobody may speak.
The group has to sort itself into a line by birthday without a word being said. What starts as confusion becomes a system — someone invents finger-counting, it spreads, and the second round takes a third of the time. That improvement is the whole point, and it is visible without anyone having to explain it.
Stand up. No talking. The screen gives you a few silent sorting challenges. Use gestures only. Keep moving. The final challenge is a surprise. Ready?
You want people collaborating within a minute of standing up, with no talking and no way for the loudest person to take over.

How to run it
Written to be glanced at mid-room, not memorised.
- "Get yourselves into a line, in order of birthday, January at that end. No talking."
- Do not say how. Working that out is the task.
- Let it run. It looks like a failure for the first thirty seconds and then it does not.
- When they think they are done, walk the line and have each person say their date out loud.
- Run a second round with a new criterion and time it.
- Good second rounds: distance travelled to get here, years in the organisation, number of countries visited.
- Say the two times out loud at the end. The gap makes the point on its own.
Running it well
Only the host sees these. Participants never do.
- Resist helping. The silence is uncomfortable for about twenty seconds and every group solves it.
- Time round one even if you do not announce it, so you can compare.
- If someone speaks, do not restart — just point at them and smile. Restarting punishes the group for one person.
- Ask what they invented, not what went wrong. Somebody always devised something worth naming.
Watch out for
Space, safety and the traps worth knowing before you start.
- Needs enough clear floor for a single line — down the side of the room usually beats the middle.
- Birthday year is never the criterion. Month and day only.
- Anyone who cannot move along the line can hold up their date and be placed by the group.
Seated version
“Everybody stand up” is not a neutral instruction. Offer this alongside, not instead.
Sort by passing a written date along a seated row and rearranging on paper, or have people hold up fingers for their month and re-order the chairs.
