Line Jump

A line on the floor. In, out, on it β and the calls stop matching the moves.
Everyone stands along an imaginary line and jumps in, out, or onto it as you call. Once they have it you start saying the opposite of what you mean, and a room that was easily keeping up falls apart in about four calls.
Everyone along this imaginary line, all facing the screen. When the screen says in, jump forward over it. Out, jump back. On, jump onto it. Small jumps β or step, that's fine. Nobody is ever out.
A room needs a short physical burst with a mental catch in it, and there is space for one long line.

How to run it
Written to be glanced at mid-room, not memorised.
- Everyone stands in a line, all facing the screen, with the imaginary line in front of them.
- The screen teaches the three calls: in, out, on. Small jumps, or a step.
- The straight calls run until the room is comfortable, then speed up.
- Then the calls start lying: the screen says in and means out.
- Back to normal, and a fast last three.
- Nobody is ever out β the people who get it wrong keep jumping and keep laughing.
Running it well
Only the host sees these. Participants never do.
- Small jumps, and say so twice. A room that starts leaping will land badly, especially on a hard floor.
- The straight calls run long enough on purpose. A room that has not settled when the calls start lying just gets confused rather than caught.
- Nobody is out, so the people who get it wrong keep jumping and keep laughing. The version where they sit down empties the line in a minute.
Watch out for
Space, safety and the traps worth knowing before you start.
- Jumping on a hard floor is a real risk for knees and backs. Say small jumps, and offer stepping instead of jumping as an equal option.
- People need a metre either side. Space the line out properly before you start.
- Anyone with knee, hip or back trouble should step rather than jump β say that before the first call, not after.
Seated version
βEverybody stand upβ is not a neutral instruction. Offer this alongside, not instead.
Feet forward, back, and together on the calls, from the chair. The catch works identically and there is no jumping at all.
Run it yourself
Free for thirty days, no card. Put it on the projector and step through it β nobody in the room needs a phone.
