Make Some Noise

Make Some Noise
Needs a room

Half the room versus the other half. Loudest side wins. There is no prize.

You split the room down the middle and have the two halves out-cheer each other, escalating until everyone is on their feet. It is the shortest and bluntest thing in the set β€” ninety seconds, no rules to explain, and it works on a room of four hundred.

Say this to the room

This half is one team. That half is the other. When I point at you, make as much noise as you can. When I point away, silence. Loudest side wins, and there is absolutely no prize.

Use this when

A big room has gone flat and you need volume immediately, with no space, no props and nothing to explain.

Props: None

Run this when…

If none of these is your room, pick another.
  1. A large conference room after a long session

  2. Straight before a break, to lift the room

  3. Any group too big for anything else

How to run it

Written to be glanced at mid-room, not memorised.

  1. Split the room down the middle with a gesture β€” no moving required.
  2. Point at one side. They make noise. Point away, they stop.
  3. Point at the other side. Same.
  4. Go back and forth, faster, so they have to watch you.
  5. Raise the stakes: now stand up while you do it, now stamp too.
  6. Both sides at once for the finish, then cut it dead with a flat palm.

Running it well

Only the host sees these. Participants never do.

  • Your own energy is the entire activity. Called flatly this is embarrassing for everyone; committed, it works on any size of room.
  • Cutting it dead at the end matters more than building it. The silence after four hundred people stop at once is the moment worth having.
  • Do not declare a winner. The moment there is a real result, half the room feels they lost a thing they did not want to play.

Watch out for

Space, safety and the traps worth knowing before you start.

  • It gets genuinely loud. Check what is happening in the next room, and do not run it where there is a session behind a thin wall.
  • Loud noise is painful for some people. Say at the start that anyone who would rather sit it out can, and mean it.
  • Nobody needs to move, which is what makes it work in packed rows.

Already seated

Nobody has to stand for this one.

It is already seated for most of it; the standing round is optional and the activity works without it.

Run it yourself

Free for thirty days, no card. Put it on the projector and step through it β€” nobody in the room needs a phone.
