The Slow Clap
One person claps. Then two. By the end the whole room is going.
You start clapping slowly on your own and people join in one at a time until the room is thundering — then you bring it back down to one person. It has no rules whatsoever and it is the closest thing to a standing ovation you can manufacture on purpose.
I'm going to start clapping. When you feel like it, join in. Don't all come in at once — let it build. Then when I slow down, we bring it back down together.
A room needs lifting at the end of something, or somebody deserves an ovation and you want the room to build one.

How to run it
Written to be glanced at mid-room, not memorised.
- Start clapping slowly and on your own. Say nothing.
- Let people join at their own pace — do not wave anybody in.
- Speed up gradually as more people come in.
- Take it to full speed and volume, then hold it for five seconds.
- Slow it back down deliberately until only a few are clapping.
- Finish with one final clap from everybody at once.
Running it well
Only the host sees these. Participants never do.
- Say nothing at all while it builds. Explaining it while clapping breaks the spell and turns it into an instruction.
- Do not wave people in. The activity is that they join when they feel it, and a room that is being conducted is just following orders.
- The single final clap needs a clear signal — hands apart, then together. Get that wrong and it fizzles instead of landing.
Watch out for
Space, safety and the traps worth knowing before you start.
- It gets very loud. Check what is next door, and offer that anyone who would rather not can sit it out.
- Nobody moves, so it works in the tightest room.
- Clapping is not available to everyone — a tap on the table joins in exactly the same.
