← Make them Think

Word Association

Word Association
Remote or in person

One word each, round the circle, in rhythm. Hesitate and we start again.

A word goes round the circle and each person says the first thing it makes them think of, on the beat. It moves fast enough that nobody can be clever, and where the chain has travelled after thirty words is a strange little map of the room.

Say this to the room

Circle up. I say a word, the next person says the first thing it makes them think of, and round we go β€” on the beat, no hesitating, no explaining. If you hesitate we start again with a new word.

Use this when

Before anything creative, or when a room is overthinking and needs to be sped up past its own editing.

Run this when…

If none of these is your room, pick another.
  1. Before an ideation session

  2. A group who deliberate too long

  3. A quick focusing activity in a circle

How to run it

Written to be glanced at mid-room, not memorised.

  1. Circle up and establish a slow clapping beat, or just a steady pace.
  2. Say a word. The next person says the first thing it brings to mind.
  3. Round the circle, on the beat. No explaining and no going back.
  4. When somebody hesitates, restart with a new word β€” cheerfully.
  5. After a full lap, ask what the first word was. Nobody ever remembers.
  6. Go again faster.

Running it well

Only the host sees these. Participants never do.

  • Ask what the starting word was at the end. Nobody remembers, and the gap between where it started and where it finished is the thing people find striking.
  • Restart without any comment on who hesitated. This only works while people are saying the first thing rather than the good thing.
  • Do not let anyone explain their word. Explaining is exactly the editing this activity exists to switch off.

Watch out for

Space, safety and the traps worth knowing before you start.

  • Nobody moves, so there is no physical consideration at all.
  • Being on the spot in a circle is exposing β€” the fast pace and the cheerful restarts are what keep it comfortable.

Already seated

Nobody has to stand for this one.

Entirely seated in a circle or along a row.

On a video call

The cards work as they are. This is what changes about how you call it.

Call the next name rather than going round, and drop the rhythm β€” audio lag makes a shared beat impossible, and the game works fine on a plain fast sequence instead. Hesitating still restarts it. Speed is what stops people editing, so keep calling names quickly.

Run it yourself

Free for thirty days, no card. Put it on the projector and step through it β€” nobody in the room needs a phone.
