The Grid Walk

Walk the room filling every empty space. No circles, no following, no gaps.
The room walks continuously with one instruction — keep the space evenly filled — and then you start freezing them to see whether they managed it. It is the calmest energiser here and it does something unusual: a room that starts as a herd ends up moving like a single organism.
Everybody walking. One job: keep the space evenly filled. No circles, no following anyone, and no empty corners. If you can see a gap, go and fill it. I'll freeze you now and then so we can see how we're doing.
Before anything about awareness, shared responsibility or noticing what is around you — and any time a room needs calm movement.

How to run it
Written to be glanced at mid-room, not memorised.
- Everyone up and walking at an even pace.
- One instruction: keep the space evenly filled. Fill any gap you see.
- Let them walk for thirty seconds, then freeze them and look at the floor together.
- Point out the gaps and the clumps without blaming anybody.
- Walk again and freeze again. It improves noticeably every time.
- Finish with a freeze where the room is genuinely evenly spread, and let them notice it.
Running it well
Only the host sees these. Participants never do.
- Freeze and look at the floor together. Describing what you see rather than telling them what to do is what makes the second attempt better.
- No circles and no following are the two rules that matter. Rooms default to both within ten seconds and the activity does not exist without them.
- The final freeze should be a good one. Wait for it rather than freezing on a schedule, so the room ends on having got it right.
Watch out for
Space, safety and the traps worth knowing before you start.
- People walk without looking where they are going. Say walking pace, eyes up, and clear the floor first.
- It needs genuine floor space for everyone to spread out. In a tight room, this is not the activity to pick.
Seated version
“Everybody stand up” is not a neutral instruction. Offer this alongside, not instead.
Not really available seated — this one needs the floor. Use Numbers Up instead if the room cannot move.
Run it yourself
Free for thirty days, no card. Put it on the projector and step through it — nobody in the room needs a phone.
